About Free BART

FreeBART.org is a grassroots movement dedicated to making Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) free for everyone. We believe that public transit is a public good and should be accessible to all, regardless of income.

Our Mission

We're fighting to make BART free because we believe that transportation is a fundamental right. When transit is free, everyone benefits: workers can access better jobs, students can reach schools and libraries, seniors can maintain independence, and families can save money while reducing their carbon footprint.

The Bay Area already invests billions in BART through taxes, regional funding, and state support. Fare revenue represents less than 20% of BART's budget. By reallocating existing resources and implementing smart funding strategies, we can make BART free without breaking the bank.

This isn't just about transit—it's about building a more equitable, sustainable, and connected Bay Area for everyone.

Our Values

Equity First

Transportation should be accessible to everyone, regardless of income, race, or background. Free transit removes barriers and creates opportunity.

Community-Driven

This movement is powered by Bay Area residents who rely on BART daily. We're building a coalition of riders, workers, students, and advocates.

Evidence-Based

We use data, research, and real-world examples from cities that have successfully implemented free transit to make our case.

Action-Oriented

We don't just talk—we organize, petition, and advocate for policy changes that will make free BART a reality.

Why Now?

The Bay Area faces multiple crises: housing affordability, climate change, traffic congestion, and economic inequality. Free BART addresses all of these challenges simultaneously.

Cities around the world—from Luxembourg to Kansas City—have proven that free transit works. It increases ridership, reduces car dependency, boosts local economies, and improves quality of life.

The resources are already there. The technology exists. The political will is growing. Now is the time to make free BART a reality.

How We'll Get There

1

Build Public Support

We're organizing petitions, rallies, and community events to demonstrate that Bay Area residents want free BART.

2

Advocate for Policy

We're working with elected officials, transit agencies, and community organizations to develop and pass legislation that makes BART free.

3

Secure Funding

We're exploring innovative funding mechanisms—from congestion pricing to regional taxes—that can sustainably fund free transit.

4

Make It Happen

Together, we'll make free BART a reality and transform transportation in the Bay Area forever.
